Why your New year resolution fails every time and how to stick to it?(2020)

New-Year-resolution-fail-how-to-stick

The new year brings a fresh perspective on life.
A new chapter.

You shake off your past regrets and shortcomings and make plans for the year ahead.

But with many of you making ambitious goals and aspiring to achieve them, history says that only 12 % of you will ever make it to the end line.
So,

What's the deal?

keep on reading to know why new year resolutions fail and how to achieve success.

1. You don't believe you can do it.

I get it.

You have tried hard many times in the past. But failed to stick through your new year resolution. It developed a false belief that you couldn't do it even if you try.
I know its hard to believe in yourself, but this doubt, this annoying voice in your head is holding you back to try again.

So what if you failed a time or two?
This year, you will try it again, and make sure to do better this time.

2. Your goal is too broad

You want to have 10 lakh rupees in your bank by the end of 2020.

-Great.

You want to build a physique like Hritik Roshan in 2020.

-Also Great

Both of the above examples are great ambitions, but they are not great goals.
Let me tell you why.

You see, when you make a resolution like make more money, lose weight, spend more time with family, etc, they lack clarity.

It's difficult to plan a course of action if you don't set specific, measurable goals.

Instead, make S.M.A.R.T goals. S.M.A.R.T stands for

S-Specific
M-Measurable
A-Achievable
R-Realistic
T-Time-bound

When you set specific, measurable goals, it becomes easier to plan and execute them.

Also, you get feedback on your progress, which keeps you motivated.

3. You Try to Rush it

Rome wasn't built in a day, my friend.

If you are one of those people, who want it all today, then you are gonna have a hard time sticking to a goal.

You cannot change your habits overnight. What you could do instead is start with changing a small habit and gradually increase difficulty.

For example, you could start with something like cutting sugar from your tea in the first week and from next week start drinking more water and so on.

This will turn your mind off of overthinking and overtime when you look back you'll see a huge difference in your habits.

4. The first Step Trap

You have decided to lose 5 kg of weight this year. Great.

Very nice and achievable goal.

Now you figured, to measure your progress you need a fitness tracker and immediately buy one.

Research says that this purchase alone gives a huge dopamine release and a sense of satisfaction that you feel you've achieved something without actually doing anything.

If you want to avoid this trap, Start Today, regardless of the resources you have.

Your first aim should be to establish a habit. Because often time down the road you will realize that you don't need a fancy fitness tracker to be healthy.

5. Don't know your Why

The biggest reason why you couldn't stick to your new year resolution is
you know what to do, but don't know your Why.

For example, everyone wants to make more money, but unless you define the specific reason for your goal, you won't be able to achieve it.

For example, I don't want to stick in a 9-5 job for the rest of my life. That's why I am focusing on Freelance Writing and making more money.

So forget about any preconceived notions and figure out your Why.

I believe I've explained the key problems which stand between you and your New year resolutions. Now its time for me to suggest some solutions.

1. Peak Just One Resolution

You may have a long list of goals you want to achieve this year. But taking too much at once can be daunting.

Instead, you should peak one goal and completely focus on that. Because creating a behavioral pattern is difficult. And focusing on specific small goals will increase your chance of success considerably.

2 Jot Down your Plan on a Paper

Do it Now.

Take a pen and paper, Give a heading {Your Goal}. Then write down your "Why", "Plan" and "Daily Actionable Steps".

Now stick it to a wall where it will hang near your eyes.

Research says that you are 42% more likely to achieve your goal if you write it down.

3. Don't let setbacks put you down

Let's face it. We are not perfect.

So, if you stumble upon a setback on the way, don't beat yourself up.

The road to your goal is not a straight one, and there are always going to be hurdles. Instead, view setbacks as learning opportunities.

4. Get some support

You've probably heard this advice a million times before. But having a solid support system can help you stay motivated.

So, find some friends who share your common goals and motivate each other to stick with your plan.

Or, tell your close friends or family to help you achieve your goal.

In conclusion, New Year resolutions aren't hard to stick to, if you have the right mindset, the right motivation and right plan for it.

So what are you waiting for? Set your New Year Resolution carefully and watch how it makes you a better human being this year!
